Sourcing Pearls: A Sustainable Symphony
The journey begins in the heart of the ocean, where our pearls are cultivated with the utmost care and respect for marine ecosystems. Our pearls are harvested from environmentally responsible farms, a delicate process that takes several years to create pure, natural gems. The coolest thing – pearls are like a fingerprint. No two are ever alike.
For cultured pearls, a bead or piece of tissue is implanted, and the oyster coats it with nacre, the inner iridescent layer of the shell that creates lustre. The colour of the pearl is influenced by the interior colour of the shell, and its size depends on both the oyster and the bead. The nacre quality, lustre and surface quality of the pearl will help determine its value when it comes to grading.
Since oysters are natural filter feeders, pearl farms today can help keep our waters clean and positively impact coral reef restoration. Revegetating local marine areas is of the highest priority.

Our skilled artisans, Angela and Raylene Boulter, transform these ocean gems into timeless pieces of jewellery. They ensure that every step – from polishing to setting – is done with minimal environmental impact, only using eco-friendly materials. The result? Stunning, guilt-free pieces that reflect our dedication to the planet.
The new Gabriella Azure earrings and Azure pendant are our first pieces made with 100 percent sustainable pearls. This is a celebration of ethical sourcing, sustainable practice and timeless elegance coming together. The ‘Gabriella’ is Mare De Vetro’s original design, and the ‘Bianca’ our best-selling piece; hence, why they were chosen to showcase these special pearls. The metal in these pieces is recycled too.
And while the focus here is on pearls, we also need to give a cheeky mention to our enchanting Azure series – another eco-friendly triumph. It features London blue topaz; flawed stones that were going to landfill, restyled into some eye-catching pieces such as the Azure ring . These gemstones were too good to waste, don’t you agree? The shade of blue is just magic.
